Juanitas gave us some lessons in up selling last Saturday at our 7:45 AM mandatory staff meeting.

They sure know how to butter us up, eh?

In their defense, there were bagels. And sparkl-y posters.

We got a handout on how to take customers from a level 2 order to a level 5 with encouraging things like alcohol, dessert, and other add-ons.

These were my favorite suggestions that they gave us:

1. When approaching a table, start with “Who’s having margaritas?” (Really drag out the “whooooo” and make the sentence sound exciting…you’ll have ’em eating out of the palm of your hand. Or annoyed beyond measure.)

2.  Example sentance to encourage dessert: “Have you tried our sopapillas? They are crazy good” (do I even need to comment on this?)

3. Example sentence to encourage drinking: “Have you ever tasted one of our signature margaritas? It’ll really get you where you’re going” (where do i assume theyre going? Detox?)

They also informed us that those in the bottom percentage of sales would be getting “reviewed” every week. Ruh roh.

Let’s just say it was certainly worth the $7.50 an hour. Plus the undeniable life lessons.

Here’s to YOU, Juanita,

Listening to:Myself smile thinking of how  i QUIT Juanitas the next day. I guess I’m not too legit to quit.

On my mind: I really hate vanity plates.

You’re blog is the only one I follow, b/c it’s hysterical. You may as well experiment with these “Upselling” tactics; you’ll get plenty of material from it and your blog may turn into a HBO series soon – kind of like Sex in the City did, but about the post economic melt-down life of the marginally, under and unemployed, as opposed to the preeconomic melt-down NYC dating scene.

    Good luck to you!

I’m making a Kenya donation. (Keep reminding yourself Juanita’s is temporary, Juanita’s is temporary).

If you quit, what will be the source of all your wisdom and humor?

I agree with Coriori, gotta hang in there for a little bit longer. Although, I’m sure if you weren’t at Juanita’s, you’d find some other way to garner wisdom & humor.

This is the perfect tag line for your HBO special: Sometimes when your career ends, your real life begins.

Are you preparing for your Kenya adventure?

Do you have to get lots of shots and stuff?

I won’t lie, I will miss bob loblaw’s job blog. And you!

I hope you find a way to post from kenya, or I might cry.

okay so i know this goes against what you were trying to portray in your blog BUT if you are trying to upsell…you should never ask a quesiton that they can answer “YES” or “NO” to. Sounds like Juanitas need a lesson themselves in UPSELLING 101. 🙂
